Coating Adhesion Testing Guide

Problem Background

Coating adhesion is the fundamental property that determines how well a coating bonds to its substrate. Poor adhesion leads to coating failure, corrosion, and costly repairs. Adhesion testing is essential for quality control, specification compliance, and failure analysis in protective coating applications.

Various test methods exist to evaluate adhesion strength, each with specific applications, advantages, and limitations. The choice of test method depends on the coating system, substrate type, and intended service environment.

Calculation Principles

Our calculator uses industry-standard formulas to predict adhesion performance based on coating properties, substrate characteristics, and environmental factors. The calculation considers:

  • • Base adhesion strength of the coating system
  • • Substrate adhesion factor based on surface preparation
  • • Environmental degradation factors
  • • Test method difficulty and reliability coefficients

Operation Examples

Cross-Cut Test

Make parallel cuts through the coating to the substrate, then apply and remove adhesive tape. Evaluate the amount of coating removed according to ISO 2409 classification scale.

Pull-Off Test

Bond a dolly to the coating surface, then apply perpendicular tensile force until failure occurs. Measure the maximum force and calculate adhesion strength in MPa.

Tape Test

Apply pressure-sensitive tape to the coating surface, then remove at a controlled angle and rate. Evaluate adhesion based on the amount of coating removed.
